The newly minted Herz Recreation Center is throwing open its doors to the community, complete with Reflection & Projection, a public artwork that captures the spirit of the neighborhood. Courtesy of the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (RPD), artist Sanjay Vora's installation serves as a vibrant beacon for inclusion, belonging, and community joy within the latest community hub in John McLaren Park. "Public art is about sparking connection, reflection, and community," Ralph Remington, Director of Cultural Affairs, said in a statement obtained by SFAC.
Measuring a substantial eight feet by ten feet, the interactive installation features reflective stainless-steel tiles that dance with the movement of its audience. A narrative of cultural diversity and community is etched into its very structure, a testament to Vora's own family's search for community, Vora explained in a post on the SFAC's Instagram. Not just a pretty facade, the work is built from steel and porcelain enamel to weather the daily wear and tear of its communal space.
The art piece comes on the heels of the Herz Recreation Center's grand opening, a notable event marking the first such facility launch in the city in over two decades. Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi praised the new space as "an important milestone" that embodies a safe and modern spot for recreation for San Franciscans of all ages, according to a release from SF Rec & Park. A comprehensive $26.1 million project, the Center enhances the cityscape with a full-size basketball court, a multipurpose room, and connections to the surrounding Sunnydale-Vistacion Valley area.
