Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited New Orleans on Wednesday to emphasize the importance of civics education during an event at Sophie B. Wright Charter School. The visit was part of the Department of Education’s “History Rocks! Trail to Independence” tour, a nationwide initiative making stops at schools across the country in advance of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.
What might have otherwise been a routine school assembly took on a civics-themed spotlight as McMahon appeared alongside prominent state education leaders and officials. According to a Department of Education press release, students from the host campus and schools across the New Orleans area participated in activities designed to strengthen their understanding of Louisiana and U.S. history, as well as their civic duties. Students were rewarded with prizes for their involvement, pairing lessons on civic engagement with a broader message of patriotism.
"Louisiana has played a defining role in our nation's story, beginning with the Louisiana Purchase and continuing through the civic traditions that shape the state today," said McMahon during her opening remarks, as detailed by the Department of Education's press release. Praising the spirit of togetherness and nation-building, McMahon shared her appreciation for Louisiana's contribution to the American narrative.
Backing this educational roadshow are several prominent organizations, such as Freedom 250 and the America 250 Civics Education Coalition, which includes a partnership with the America First Policy Institute, Turning Point USA, Hillsdale College, and over 50 other groups. Their coalition aims at boosting civic education, making the American story available for students to understand and appreciate. More details on the coalition and its agenda can be found, overflowing with patriotic vigor, in the same Department of Education's press release.
McMahon’s tour is part of a broader slate of Department of Education initiatives marking the United States’ Semiquincentennial, the nation’s 250th anniversary. Freedom 250, the organization overseeing the anniversary’s presidential programming, is coordinating efforts tied to the commemoration, with a stated mission to honor the country’s history of freedoms while highlighting opportunities for future generations. More information about the initiative is available on Freedom 250’s official website.
