Today, tragedy struck on Kaukonahua Road when a minivan careened out of control, sending its three occupants—a 39-year-old woman, an 11-year-old girl, and a 9-year-old boy—to the hospital in serious condition. KHON2 reported that Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS) promptly responded to the scene around 1:06 a.m., where they found the vehicle lodged in the bushes.
The driver, alongside the two keiki, was all found to have suffered multiple serious injuries. It appears that the vehicle had to drastically lost control before ultimately landing off-road. In a statement obtained by Hawaii News Now, officials from EMS identified the victims and said they co-responded to treat the patients.
Kaukonahua Road, which was temporarily closed between Nui Drive and Wilikina Drive due to the accident, has since been reopened to traffic. The closure was necessary as first responders worked to secure the scene and investigators began to piece together the details of what led up to the crash.
The condition of the three individuals taken to the ER remains serious. EMS crews were reported to have effectively treated the victims for their injuries on site before transporting them to the hospital. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of this harrowing event and have yet to release further details regarding the status of the victims.
