San Francisco streets were the stage for a crackdown on illegal sideshow activities this past week, as the San Francisco Police Department's Stunt Driving Response Unit (SDRU) moved quickly to intercept reckless drivers and maintain public safety. The incident, which unfolded on Sunday night, saw SFPD officers respond to reports of vehicles performing dangerous stunts at the intersection of Clement Street and 32nd Avenue.

A notable arrest was made when officers stopped a vehicle, previously flagged by the Oakland Police Department for stunt driving, and found to potentially contain armed occupants. The SFPD swiftly took action to detain the four individuals inside. Inside the vehicle, police found an illegal assault rifle, an extended magazine, as well as multiple other magazines and ammunition. This led to the arrest of Albert Martinez Zavala, a 22-year-old from Vacaville, for firearm violations, as reported by the San Francisco Police Department.

In a separate but related incident, the California Highway Patrol's air support unit played a pivotal role in locating another vehicle associated with the sideshow. Parked near the 7000 block of California Street, the second vehicle's driver, Francisco Javier Mercado of Modesto, was also detained without incident. Mercado, also 22, faced arrest for his outstanding warrant and for reckless endangerment, in addition to his participation in the stunt-driving event. The SFPD confiscated his vehicle at the scene.

The SFPD's message was clear in the aftermath: public safety remains paramount, and the department's collective efforts have yielded tangible outcomes in the face of criminal activity. "These results speak volumes about the effectiveness of our citywide collaboration and your commitment to keeping San Francisco safe," Captain Kevin Lee of SFPD Richmond Station stated in a release. SFPD urges the community to stay vigilant and promptly report any sideshow or stunt-driving events. For emergencies, they recommend calling 911, and for non-emergencies, the public should use the number 1-415-553-0123. Tips regarding sideshow activities can also be sent anonymously to the SFPD by contacting 1-415-575-4444 or by texting TIP411 and starting the message with SFPD.
