
Family members in Shasta County say they are not getting the answers they need after a relative was killed inside Pleasant Valley State Prison in Fresno County. Corrections officials identified the man as 41-year-old Brion E. Spidle, who was found unconscious in a housing unit and later pronounced dead. According to a press release from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, staff responded at 2:07 p.m. on Jan. 17 to an incident inside the Dorm 1 dayroom of Pleasant Valley’s Minimum Support Facility and found Spidle on the ground and unconscious. Medical staff began life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at 2:33 p.m. Officials said no weapon was recovered at the scene and two incarcerated men were quickly identified as suspected assailants and secured without incident.

Spidle’s relatives, who live in Shasta County, told Action News Now they want a clear explanation of how the attack unfolded inside a supposedly controlled environment. The family said they plan to keep pressing prison and county officials for updates as the investigation moves forward.
Suspects Identified, Investigation Underway
According to reporting by Yahoo News, the suspected assailants were identified as Jorge Ortega and Victor Wence, who were then placed in restricted housing. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said the Office of the Inspector General was notified and the Fresno County coroner will determine Spidle’s official cause of death. The department also noted that Spidle had been received from Shasta County on June 2, 2025 and was serving a four-year sentence.
