Princeton, Massachusetts, became the focal point of a tragic story involving allegations of child sexual abuse material and the abrupt death of an afterschool teacher. According to The Boston Globe, on Thursday, authorities arrived at the home of John Buffington, 67, to serve a search warrant related to child pornography. Buffington, upon realizing law enforcement presence, fled to his garage and shot himself.
After serving the warrant that was catalyzed by a tip from an electronic service provider to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, officials discovered what has been described as evidence of child sexual abuse material, including images involving at least one child known to Buffington. This was part of what led local police, state troopers, and members of a federal task force to his home. "When they searched Buffington’s home, law enforcement discovered evidence of child sexual abuse material," a statement by Massachusetts State Police obtained by The Boston Globe confirmed.
Buffington's role in the community was that of an educator, teaching classes in woodworking, primitive skills, and kite-making for the town's parks and recreation department. Additionally, a previous role at an afterschool program in Lincoln, which he vacated in 2014, added to his profile as a community member in a position of trust. Shared in a report by WHDH, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan commented on the effort to gather records from children who were in the program at that time to offer support to families that might be impacted.
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, law enforcement officials have indicated that there is no apparent evidence that any child whom Buffington encountered has been harmed. This claim, in the report provided to WHDH, came from officials who are currently working to better understand the scope of Buffington's activities. In their mission to identify and provide appropriate services to any parties affected, local, state, and federal agencies are joining forces.
Families who have concerns about their child’s interactions with Buffington in Princeton and Lincoln have been urged to contact the Children’s Advocacy Center of Worcester County and the Middlesex Children’s Advocacy Center, respectively. Their declarations stress the importance of community engagement in order to ensure that all potentially affected individuals receive the support and services they require during this investigation.
