Authorities in Gwinnett County have disclosed critical details surrounding a fatal shooting that took place in Snellville. The Gwinnett County Police Department identified the victim of the Sunday incident as 36-year-old Abel Alejandro Unzicker Chavez. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Chavez, a Snellville resident, was allegedly killed by Derrick Devon Thomas, age 30, also from Snellville. Officers have charged Thomas with felony murder in addition to aggravated assault, possession of firearm during commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The investigation is still ongoing as detectives work to uncover the motivations behind the shooting. The incident reportedly occurred on Saddle Ridge Drive. Thomas, the accused, is no stranger to law enforcement, having already been on the wrong side of the law due to past felony convictions. Despite the tragic event, investigators have indicated that the shooting appears to be an isolated case and reassured the public that there is no immediate threat to their safety.
Tapping into the fabric of Chavez's personal life, Atlanta News First shed light on the man behind the casualty. He was described by his family as a father to two young girls, a dedicated family man, and a self-made hard worker. This account paints a stark contrast to the scene of loss and grief brought about by the incident.
As the investigation forges ahead, Gwinnett County police seek the help of public with gathering more information about the case. They urge anyone who might know something to step forward and contact the Gwinnett County police or Crime Stoppers. To maintain confidentiality, informants can reach out to Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477), or visit their website to provide anonymous tips. "Crime Stoppers tipsters can receive a cash reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case," family of Chavez told Atlanta News First.
