An early morning crash in Chicago's Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood left an 18-year-old driver dead and two passengers fighting for their lives Sunday, after a white Jeep Cherokee slammed into multiple homes around 5:20 a.m., according to police. Officers later recovered two firearms from inside the vehicle following the single-car wreck.
What police reported
According to FOX 32 Chicago, the crash happened in the 0-100 block of East Marquette Road and drew a large response from emergency crews. The 18-year-old driver was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Two male passengers, including a 14-year-old boy, were rushed in critical condition to Comer Children’s Hospital, FOX 32 Chicago reports. Despite the Jeep hitting several residences, no additional injuries were reported inside nearby homes.
Why teen-driver wrecks often turn deadly
Serious crashes involving young drivers are tragically common, which helps explain why a single-vehicle crash like this can have such severe consequences. Federal data from NHTSA shows that 15- to 20-year-old drivers accounted for 8.1% of all drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2022, even though they made up only about 5% of licensed drivers.
According to NHTSA, inexperience, speed, and failing to use seat belts rank among the biggest factors behind those grim numbers. When something goes wrong, younger drivers often have less time and skill to correct course.
Investigation and next steps
The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Investigations Unit is handling the case and working to reconstruct how the Jeep ended up slamming into multiple homes. Detectives say two guns were recovered from the vehicle, but officials have not released the names of those involved or said whether any criminal charges could follow.
Per FOX 32 Chicago, the investigation remains active. Neighbors can expect to see a continued police presence in the area as investigators document the scene and process evidence.
Authorities typically release more details after notifying family members and completing initial forensic work. City records and public statements are expected to be updated once the Major Accidents unit finishes its review and any next steps are determined.
