The Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) has hit the ground running in 2026, seizing five illegal firearms on Adams Street, following a record-breaking year of recoveries in 2025. Last year saw the FIU confiscating 164 unlawful guns, marking the highest number in its five-year history. The unit's persistent efforts were evident as they carried out a successful search warrant execution that led to multiple arrests and the recovery of firearms, drugs, and other contraband on Saturday.

Last Saturday around 6:30 pm, under the guidance of Sergeant Evan Donermeyer, and with the support of the Police Emergency Services Unit and Neighborhood Stabilization Bureau, Springfield Police apprehended seven individuals. Accompanied by the seizures was a substantial amount of crack-cocaine, underlining the link between drugs and illegal arms in the community. Caught in the fray were two adults and several juveniles. According to the Springfield Police Department, the suspects came from a household that has been at the center of many problems plaguing the South End neighborhood.

Police Superintendent Lawrence E. Akers praised the unit, stating, “Our Firearms Investigation Unit continues to build on its success with a record number of illegal guns taken off the street," as reported by the Springfield Police Department. In a show of municipal unity, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno also chimed in, applauding the SPD's commitment and success in removing "illegal guns off our streets and out of our neighborhoods."

Specifically targeted in the investigation was 18-year-old Jadis Arnold-Roberts, who, among other charges, faces multiple counts related to illegal firearms possession and cocaine trafficking. Found accompanying the illicit firearms were a silencer, a bulletproof vest, extra magazines, and loose rounds of ammunition. Angel Sanchez, another adult suspect with a previous firearms conviction, was also on the scene when the operation unfolded, along with 23-year-old Sergio Torres and a handful of younger individuals who all now face various charges. Though minors' identities remain protected, the charges they face will not be made light by their age.

The increasing numbers of firearms seizures by the FIU, evident in the steady escalation since their inception, signals a proactive stance in combating gun violence in Springfield. Not just numbers, but lives tell the tale of the proliferation and danger of illegal firearms, with 2025's figures of 347 total and 164 by the FIU alone.
