Commuters in St. Tammany Parish can finally take a sigh of relief as the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced the completion of major work on the US 190 Bridge and Widening Project, a substantial upgrade that promises smoother traffic and safer rides for thousands daily. The announcement comes as a beacon of progress to the area, signaling the end of congestion that has long been a bane to local drivers.

The project’s most significant accomplishment is the construction of a new bridge adjacent to the existing Bogue Falaya River Bridge, along with the widening of US 190 (Collins Boulevard) from the US 190/US 190B intersection to LA 437 (Lee Road). The improvements are expected to ease the long-standing traffic bottleneck that once caused backups of up to 1.25 miles. As the project nears completion, all lanes have been reopened, and new traffic signals are now in operation. The DOTD notes that final striping work remains and will be completed when weather conditions allow.

Infrastructure buffs will appreciate the laundry list of improvements that came with the $30 million effort - we're talking new asphalt pavement, improved drainage, freshly minted traffic signals, constructed dividers, and J-turns, all aimed at preventing crashes and cushioning the daily commute. The DOTD says these improvements "are designed to enhance traffic flow and safety, with the highway dividers and J-turns proven to increase safety by reducing conflict points and limiting crashes that result in serious injuries," as travelers navigating north of I-12 will no longer have to merge into a strangled two-lane bridge crossing.

While the new bridge remains the project’s headline feature, several other upgrades also played a key role. LA 437 (Lee Road) was widened at its intersection with Collins Boulevard, improving traffic flow for drivers traveling from West 30th Avenue and helping reduce congestion that was once a regular occurrence. The Tammany Trace has also reopened following repairs and improvements, complementing the broader transportation upgrades throughout Covington and the surrounding area, according to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
