A 33-year-old man was shot multiple times Sunday evening around 5:57 p.m. in a parking lot on the 800 block of East 79th Street in Chatham, after police say a stolen Kia pulled up and at least one person got out and opened fire. Officers later tracked down the Kia on the 8200 block of South Woodlawn and took a 17-year-old male into custody, who was also found with a gunshot wound to his stomach. Both the 33-year-old and the teen were rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, and area detectives are now working the case.
Chicago police shared an initial rundown of the attack with local media, saying the shooting unfolded just before 6 p.m. and that officers later recovered the stolen Kia, according to FOX 32 Chicago. CBS Chicago reports that one suspect, a 17-year-old male, was taken into custody and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center with a stomach wound. No other arrests had been announced by Sunday night as Area Two detectives continued processing the scene.
Neighborhood pattern and city trends
Gunfire shatters late-night rides in Chatham often enough that local outlets have been tracking the incidents, many of which end with victims sent to the University of Chicago Medical Center and a familiar perimeter of tape along and near 79th Street. At the same time, citywide numbers show shootings and homicides fell by more than 30 percent through the first half of 2025, according to reporting by WTTW. Yet low clearance rates for nonfatal shootings remain a stubborn problem, as highlighted by WBEZ, which has reported that many such cases never result in an arrest.
Investigators ask for tips
Police are asking anyone with information about the 79th Street shooting to contact Area Two detectives, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Officials have not released a description of the shooter or shooters, and investigators said no additional arrests had been made at last report, as noted by CBS Chicago.
