Union Square, a bustling hub in the heart of San Francisco, is welcoming a new addition to its culinary scene with the arrival of a local fast-food favorite, Super Duper Burgers. According to a press release by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, the Bay Area burger chain was chosen among six competitors to set up shop in the iconic plaza as a part of the city's revitalization project, beating out other food and beverage operators for the coveted Union Square spot, which they are expected to occupy by early fall of this year.
As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, the well-loved eatery, which got its start in 2010 in the Castro neighborhood, aims to bring its locally sourced burgers, shakes, and fries to the east side of the square, and even though Super Duper Burgers is already a familiar name with 19 locations throughout Northern California, Super Duper’s co-owner Edmonodo Sarti expressed his enthusiasm about the new location saying, "Union Square is so iconic for San Francisco, given this is the city where we started, we always wanted a little bit of a center stage here, there are a lot of tourists, a lot of people who have never been exposed to our burger, so it’s a good spot to showcase to the rest of the world what we do."
In a social media post, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie echoed this sentiment, declaring Super Duper Burgers as a local stalwart that brings a taste of the city's heart to its most celebrated public places, reinforcing the efforts to revive Union Square's vibrant atmosphere. The mayor, sharing his personal penchant for their shakes, stated, "Thank you to @sfrecpark
for leading the work to activate this space." Not all news has been positive, though, as the Union Square area has previously grappled with challenges such as public safety concerns, declining sales, and financially troubled retailers, including Saks Global, which has sold major property holdings in the neighborhood.

Nonetheless, signs of resurgence in Union Square have emerged highlighting signs of resurgence such as Super Duper's presence and other new businesses like Labubu maker Pop Mart, Dandelion Chocolate, and the return of Uniqlo; in the third quarter of 2025, the retail vacancy rate reportedly decreased to 22.7% from 23.0%, and the average monthly visitors saw a 3% increase, according to the Union Square Alliance.
