A 19-year-old man was shot and killed while driving in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood last Thursday, according to police. His car came to a stop after slamming into a parked vehicle on the 5800 block of West Walton, and he was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later died. Detectives from Area Four are investigating the fatal shooting.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, the gunfire erupted at about 6:30 p.m., when an unidentified man walked up to the vehicle and opened fire, hitting the driver in the head and leg. The Cook County medical examiner identified the victim as Angel Aviles, 19, the station reports. After the shots were fired, Aviles' vehicle collided with an unoccupied parked car and came to rest. He was transported to Mount Sinai, where he was pronounced dead.
Austin Has Seen Repeated Shootings
The West Side's Austin neighborhood has been the site of multiple shootings over the past year, from drive-bys to officer-involved incidents, complicating efforts by residents and local leaders to improve safety, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. Community groups and aldermen continue to call for a mix of patrols and violence-prevention programs amid ongoing concerns.
Area Four Detectives Working The Case
Area Four detectives are leading the investigation and say it is still unclear whether the shooting was targeted or random, FOX 32 Chicago reports. Investigators are expected to review surveillance and witness footage from the block and follow up on tips, but police have not released a suspect description. No arrests have been made and no charges have been filed.
Officials have not released further details; the medical examiner’s identification remains the primary public record at this point. This story will be updated if Chicago police or Cook County authorities make additional information available.
