
An avalanche near Johnson Peak and Castle Peak in Truckee, California, claimed one life. According to the Nevada County Sheriff's Office's Post, The incident followed a 911 call at 2:19 p.m. yesterday, transferred from Washoe County, reporting a group of snowmobilers caught in the slide and one person unaccounted for.
Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue teams responded alongside the Truckee and North Truckee fire departments and Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue. Crews initially mobilized for a Placer County missing person case before being redirected to the avalanche scene, deploying three SnoCats along with snowmobile and ski teams.
The snowmobiler was located by other recreationists, but despite immediate lifesaving efforts, the victim did not survive. The individual’s identity is being withheld pending family notification.
The scene remained active as crews worked to ensure no additional victims were at risk. The Sheriff’s Office warned of the potential for further avalanches and urged recreationists to avoid the area. Officials said updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
The Sheriff’s Office extended sincere condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones. Authorities also reminded the public of the risks of mountain recreation, particularly during winter.
