In two separate incidents, individuals have been harmed, with one fire resulting in fatalities. ABC15 reports that a fire at the Citadel Retirement Community in Mesa resulted in one person being hospitalized. The specifics of their injuries remain undisclosed.
The fire in Mesa erupted on a Sunday evening. According to fire officials, upon arrival, smoke was seen emanating from a second-floor apartment. Fortunately, the firefighting team was able to swiftly subdue the flames, thus preventing further damage to the community. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Contrastingly, in Peoria, a much more tragic scenario unfolded at the Olive Ridge Senior Living apartment community. Police have confirmed through a statement to AZFamily that an elderly couple, Gene John Kaluza, 82, and Joanne Gail Kaluza, 79, were found deceased following a blaze in their apartment.
Reports indicate that an explosion inside the apartment was heard by witnesses, which may have influenced the severity of the fire. Peoria Police Officer Kristopher Babros indicated that charred remains of an electric wheelchair and oxygen tanks, suggestive of possible involvement in the explosion, were discovered amidst the wreckage. "There’s just studs and 2x4s left standing," Babros said, highlighting the extent of the devastation. Nearby residents were evacuated as a safety precaution, but accounts from neighbors like Margaret Young indicate that there were no smoke detectors in the victims' unit.
