A tragic off-road vehicle accident involving six juvenile Utah County residents occurred last Friday, around 7 p.m., near West Mountain, according to multiple reports. A 14-year-old girl was airlifted in critical condition following the side-by-side OHV rollover. Additionally, the 14-year-old boy operating the vehicle was taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Salt Lake County for treatment of significant injuries, as detailed in statements released by the Utah Division of Natural Resources of Law Enforcement Management, reported by Gephardt Daily.
The event took an even grimmer tone as two female passengers were said to have transported themselves to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while two additional passengers, one male and one female, were treated on scene for minor injuries. All involved were local to the area, and the investigation surrounding the specifics of the crash is currently ongoing, as reported by ABC4, reflecting the deep ties and potential impact on the local community.
In the wake of the crash, authorities have reiterated the importance of safety precautions for OHV riders. Among their recommendations, wearing a DOT-approved helmet and understanding both the capabilities of the vehicle and the terrain are critical, as stated in the release from the DNR and echoed across reports. These sentiments were also underlined in the immediate response praised by the DNR, which also acknowledged the efforts of LifeFlight, Payson, and Santaquin Fire and EMS teams, and local law enforcement for their swift action. Both FOX 13 and the Utah County Sheriff‘s Office echoed these statements on security practices.
