
A tragic car accident on Interstate 55 near South Parkway in Memphis claimed the lives of two individuals and left two others injured on Wednesday evening. According to the Memphis Police Department, the incident involved a multi-vehicle collision that occurred around 4:30 p.m., as reported by WREG. The Tennessee Department of Transportation confirmed that the crash resulted in an over five-hour closure of the southbound lanes on I-55, causing significant traffic delays.
The nature of the incident, which included five vehicles, led to the interruption of travel for numerous commuters, with traffic being rerouted onto East McLemore Avenue. In a statement obtained by Action News 5, the Memphis Police Department revealed that two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, and two others were transported to a nearby hospital for non-critical injuries.
Witness accounts add a human perspective to the unfolding events. Resident Taylor Givand, in an interview with WREG, shared the impact of the crash's aftermath on her and her son, "My son, actually, we drove past it, and he was like, what’s going on? And I just said moments like this we just say God bless you, that’s all we can say in moments like that because that vehicle was done for," shedding light on the emotional toll such incidents take on passersby and the wider community. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
