The Utah men's basketball team took a hit in their Big 12 opener, succumbing to a 97-78 loss against the top-ranked Arizona Wildcats. The game, which took place at the Jon M. Huntsman Center, saw the Wildcats take a significant lead early on and maintain control throughout the match. Utah’s effort to claw back into the game was met with a steadfast Arizona, which showcased the prowess that keeps them at number one in the rankings.
Arizona's performance was notable, with a 14-0 run in the early minutes setting the tone for the rest of the game. Despite Utah's brief resurgence, the Wildcats outplayed the Utes in several key areas, including turnovers, where they nabbed 12, turning them into 18 points. And according to AZ Desert Swarm, Arizona didn’t make its first post-halftime field goal until 17:06 left, but quickly returned to form with an 8-0 run extending the lead further.
Terrence Brown of the Runnin' Utes had a standout performance despite the loss, leading the game with 26 points, six assists, and four rebounds. This marks Brown's fifth consecutive 20-plus point game, as highlighted by Utahutes.com. Aside from Brown, Don McHenry and Keanu Dawes each contributed 15 points for Utah. Nevertheless, the team's efforts were not enough to overcome the deficit, which had reached 17 points by the first media timeout.
The victorious Wildcats had six players reach double-figure scoring in what can be described as a balanced effort. As KUTV reported, Utah "matched Arizona's points scored in the second half with 39," which suggests that the team maintains the potential to compete at a high level this season. Despite the loss, the Utes showed impressive resilience and have an opportunity to rebound in their next outing against Colorado on January 7.
Looking ahead, Utah will face its first road challenge in the Big 12 against Colorado, with the hope of turning its luck around in conference play. The Utes, who currently stand at 8-6 overall and 0-1 in conference, will rely on their key players like Brown to propel them forward. Meanwhile, Arizona will carry its winning momentum into its Big 12 home opener against Kansas State, as they continue to assert its dominance in college basketball this season.
