
A Uxbridge, Massachusetts, police officer was killed early Wednesday on Route 146, CBS Boston reports. The officer, on duty around 12:40 a.m., was assisting another driver on the highway’s northbound side when the crash occurred.
The officer died from injuries sustained in the crash, the Uxbridge Police Department said. The officer’s identity has not been released while authorities notify next of kin. Route 146 north at exit 6 was closed this morning, causing traffic delays, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
Uxbridge Police Chief Marc Montminy called the officer’s death “a devastating loss for our department and our community.” 7NEWS reported a solemn procession for the fallen officer, including state police, the medical examiner’s office, and fellow officers.
Details of the crash, including the number of vehicles involved, are unclear. Roads across Massachusetts have been hazardous due to overnight freezing rain. Counseling services are available for officers and staff. Updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
