Yesterday at a Walnut Creek gas station, it turned violent when a clerk was shot during a struggle with masked suspects, police say. The employee was rushed to a hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, and officers have since arrested a juvenile while they continue to track a second suspect.
What Police Say Happened
According to Patch, two masked suspects walked into the Kwik Serve at 1387 S. California Blvd shortly before 3:54 AM and tried to steal cigarettes. When the employee confronted them, a struggle broke out and the worker was shot, Walnut Creek police told reporters.
Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
Detectives later arrested a 16-year-old in connection with the holdup at about 6 PM, with help from the Oakland Police Department, the Walnut Creek Police Department said. The teen suspect was booked into juvenile hall, and investigators have opened an active case under number 26-337.
Clerk’s Condition and Official Response
The wounded employee was taken to a nearby hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot injury, according to Patch. Authorities have not released the worker’s name or further identifying details as the investigation continues.
How the Public Can Help
Police are asking anyone who saw or heard anything, or who may have security footage from the area, to contact the Walnut Creek Police Department at (925) 943-5844. Anonymous tips can be left on the department’s tip line at (925) 943-5865. The department listed Lieutenant Drew Olson ([email protected]) as the media contact in its Walnut Creek Police Department post.
Juvenile Case and Legal Limits on Information
Because the suspect is a minor, much of the case file is likely to remain sealed from public view under California law. Welfare & Institutions Code §827 generally restricts public access to juvenile court records and spells out who is allowed to see those documents while a case is active, according to FindLaw.
Recent Crime Context in Walnut Creek
Walnut Creek has seen its share of high-profile robberies in recent years. In 2023, a man was pistol-whipped and robbed of an estimated $100,000 in jewelry in a city parking garage, as reported by CBS San Francisco. Police say swift follow-up on tips and coordination with neighboring agencies, as in the latest case, are key to getting suspects into custody.
