Early this morning, Martin Police Department officers responded to a disturbance call, possibly involving gunfire, at the Days Inn on 800 University St. While handling the initial call, deputies from the Weakley County Sheriff's Office were en route to assist, as reported by the Martin Police Department.

Around 3:09 a.m., the Weakley County Sheriff's Office deputies spotted an occupied vehicle leaving the nearby Pocket's gas station at 821 University St. The vehicle's driver then opened fire, tragically striking one of the deputies, as stated by the Martin Police Department.

According to the Martin Police Department on their Facebook page, a suspect was arrested by MPD officers after a shooting on University Street in Martin, Tennessee, in which a WCSO deputy was shot and later died at Volunteer Community Hospital. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations is investigating the incident. Martin Police Chief Phillip W. Fuqua said there is now “no continued threat to the public.”
