Early this morning, employees at the Webster Post Office in Massachusetts spotted a suspicious package left unattended in the lobby. The Webster Police Department reported that they received a call about the incident around 4:48 AM and responded together with the Webster Fire Department to assess the situation.
Upon evaluation, the authorities decided the package required a closer look. "Police Officers and Firefighters determined that the package was, indeed suspicious and that further investigation was necessary," said the Webster Police Department through a social media post. A safety perimeter was quickly established, with Main St. in front of the Post Office and Town Hall temporarily shut down, and local traffic re-routed to safely conduct the investigation.
The Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit and Bomb Squad were summoned to the scene as additional precautionary measures took place. The neighboring community institutions, including Town and Library Offices, were closed, and school bus companies were instructed to swiftly adjust their routes to avoid the area.
The State Police Bomb Squad did not take long to determine that the suspicious package posed no danger to the public. "Upon the arrival of State Police Bomb Squad members, an investigation commenced and it was quickly determined that the suspicious package posed no threat," as per a report by the Webster Police. After approximately three hours of investigation and precautions, Main St. was re-opened and emergency crews cleared out, signaling a return to normalcy.
This incident illustrated the coordinated efforts of local and state agencies putting public safety at the forefront. Even though the disruptions, such as traffic detours and office closures, can be inconvenient, such measures are in place to maintain the security of the community at large.
