A 10-year-old Atlanta boy is currently stable after undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound to the chest, as reported by authorities. This incident occurred at a residence in southeast Atlanta yesterday morning. According to a FOX 5 Atlanta article, the Atlanta Police Department responded to the 100 block of Ruzelle Drive SE around 6:45 a.m. following a call about shots being fired.
Upon arriving, police found the child in critical condition and rendered immediate aid, applying a chest seal before rushing him to Grady Memorial Hospital in a patrol vehicle. Deputy Chief Prenzinna Spann of APD's Criminal Investigations Division lauded the officers’ decisive actions. "Our officers saw the child was in critical condition and acted immediately to save his life," Spann said during a briefing, as noted by CBS News Atlanta. "Their actions made a difference."
The shooting appears to have resulted from an escalating dispute between two parties, though the intended target was not the wounded boy. The young victim was one of at least four children under the age of 10 inside the home when three suspects in a silver sedan approached and fired multiple shots into the house, causing extensive damage. Despite the targeted nature of the attack, police have not confirmed if there is any known connection between the suspects and the occupants of the home.
While there have been no arrests made in the case, authorities are actively searching for the three suspects and have issued a public appeal for any information regarding a silver sedan associated with the incident. They encourage anyone with leads to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers Atlanta, with the assurance that tipsters can remain anonymous. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives continue to work on determining the exact nature of the dispute that incited the gunfire, according to a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta.
