A 70-year-old man who had been banned from the San Pablo Lytton Casino died after a late-night arrest that started with casino security and ended in a Contra Costa County jail, according to San Pablo police.

Police say casino security staff detained and handcuffed the man last Saturday for allegedly trespassing on the property. When officers arrived, they took the man into custody and later booked him on suspicion of trespassing.

Officers were called at about 10:44 PM regarding a banned guest who refused to leave. By the time they showed up, security had already restrained the man and handed him over. The department says its officers did not use force during the arrest, and the man was then transported to a county jail.

Medical Emergency at County Jail

While in the jail, the man experienced what authorities described as a medical emergency. Jail staff and Contra Costa Fire Protection District personnel provided medical aid and took him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police say his name is being withheld until his family can be notified, according to a press release from the San Pablo Police Department.

Joint Investigation Under Way

San Pablo police say they have launched a joint investigation with the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office, in line with county protocol for in-custody deaths. Anyone with information is asked to contact the department at 510-215-3150, as stated by the San Pablo Police Department.
