A Bartow High School teacher found himself on the wrong side of the law after a backyard burn went awry, spreading flames over five acres and landing him multiple misdemeanor charges. Brian Webster was arrested following the incident that flouted a Polk County burn ban, with his attempt to incinerate debris in an unconventional bonfire spiraling out of control.
The blaze was said to be among over thirty that erupted across the county, defying a burn ban that had been strictly in place since November 25, 2025, due to dangerously dry conditions. Webster, the accused resident of Cox Road in Bartow, reportedly took to burn cardboard boxes and other materials inside an old refrigerator in a bid to abjectly prevent the spread of fire. It's been reported by the Polk County Sheriff's Office that he monitored the flame but it slipped beyond his grasp, failing to stifle its growth.
Sheriff Grady Judd underscored the importance of adherence to the ban, citing the risk to "property and lives" in his statement. Webster's charges include Reckless Land Burning, Burning during a State of Emergency, Reckless/Careless Pollution, and Violating the County Burn Ban, all classified as misdemeanors. The Polk County Sheriff's Office noted the immediate and rising danger posed by the rash of brush fires on Sunday, which seemed to justify the burn ban's establishment.
The arrested Bartow educator was processed at the Sheriff’s Processing Center. As for now, any further questions concerning Webster's employment with Polk County Public Schools have been directed to be routed to the district authorities. Sheriff Judd did not mince words when he pointedly emphasized the vital reasoning behind the ban, stating, "There is good reason why Polk County officials issued the burn ban, and Sunday’s numerous brush fires are a perfect example of that. Additionally, Governor Ron DeSantis declared a State of Emergency recently due to extreme drought. Property and lives are at risk, and we will charge people appropriately," according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office's official statement.
