A Sunday afternoon armed robbery that started on Park Boulevard ended in a tense stop on the Bay Bridge, where Oakland police arrested four men after tracking a suspected getaway car out of the city.
Investigators say three people walked into a business on the 1800 block of Park Boulevard, threatened staff at gunpoint and then took off in a waiting vehicle. The suspects allegedly switched cars in East Oakland before officers caught up with them and moved in for a coordinated stop on the bridge.
According to the Oakland Police Department, patrol officers followed the getaway vehicle through Oakland and onto the Bay Bridge. With backup from the California Highway Patrol and the San Francisco Police Department, they carried out a high-risk stop and took four Oakland men into custody. The department advisory states the robbery happened just after 2:15 p.m. on Sunday and that investigators are actively following leads. The investigation remains open, and officers are asking anyone with relevant photos or video to share them with detectives.
High-Risk Stop Under Tighter Pursuit Rules
Oakland has recently tightened when and how officers can chase vehicles, amid ongoing debate over the dangers of high-speed pursuits and overall public safety. A post-vote update on the city’s policy describes changes, set to take effect Jan. 1, that stress oversight and coordination between agencies when a pursuit or high-risk stop is deemed necessary. Details on those changes are outlined by the Oakland Police Commission.
