As citizens across the nation turn their calendars to February, the Greater Cleveland area comes alive with events and activities honoring Black History Month. This annual observance is a time for reflection and celebration of the contributions of African Americans to the cultural and historical tapestry of the United States.
Among the local venues joining in the commemoration, the Lakewood Public Library is set to host a screening of Hidden Figures. This acclaimed movie recounts the story of three African American women mathematicians at NASA who played a pivotal role in the success of astronaut John Glenn's orbital mission. According to information provided by the City of Lakewood's website, these women broke through barriers of race and gender and remain an inspiration to many. The library will also throw the spotlight on a novel retelling of Mark Twain's classic, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, but from the lens of Jim, the escaped slave.
Not to be outdone, the Cleveland Museum of Art invites the public to explore Black art history through free tours that promise a deep dive into the contributions of Black artists. Available on Sundays and Wednesdays throughout February, these tours provide a unique opportunity to engage with a often overlooked facet of art history. As stated on the museum's website, tickets are required even though the events are free to attend.
