San José detectives have arrested 20-year-old Manuel Orozco-Calderon after tying him to a September shooting at a business along McKee Road. Authorities say he was tracked down in Modesto and taken into custody last Wednesday. The man who was shot at was not injured, and investigators say the case is still active.
What the police say
According to the San José Police Department, officers were called out around 9:30 PM on Sept. 16 for a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at a business in the 2300 block of McKee Road. Investigators say a man pulled out a gun inside the business, then walked outside and fired at an adult male who remained inside. The intended victim was not hit. As the investigation moved forward, detectives obtained both an arrest warrant and a search warrant.
Arrest in Modesto
As reported by SFGATE, detectives from the department's Assaults Unit, working with the Covert Response Unit, located Orozco-Calderon in Modesto and arrested him on Feb. 11. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and shooting into an inhabited dwelling. Police say a search warrant was also served at a related residence as part of the case.
Charges and next steps
The San José Police Department says Orozco-Calderon remains in custody at the county main jail, facing allegations of assault with a deadly weapon and shooting into an inhabited dwelling. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Soria in the Assaults Unit or to send tips anonymously through the P3TIPS app or Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers. As with all arrests, the listed charges are accusations, and Orozco-Calderon is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.
Local context
McKee Road is a heavily traveled commercial corridor that the city has already flagged for safety upgrades, and officials have launched the McKee Road Safety Project to cut down on crashes and make the area more walkable. The city describes a package of crosswalk, median and traffic-calming improvements for the stretch between U.S. 101 and Toyon Avenue to respond to safety concerns, according to the City of San José. Police and city planners say that both law enforcement and infrastructure work are part of the long-term approach to dealing with incidents along the corridor.
