A person was shot and killed last night in East Oakland after gunfire broke out along International Boulevard, police said.
Officers were dispatched just after 6:45 p.m. to the 9800 block of International Boulevard following reports of shots fired. When they arrived, they found a victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Medical personnel pronounced the person dead at the scene. The victim’s identity has not yet been released, and investigators say the case remains active.
According to NBC Bay Area, Oakland police said the department’s Homicide Section is leading the investigation. Where this fits in recent violence
The killing comes amid a run of deadly incidents in East Oakland, including a triple shooting on International Boulevard in early January that left three people dead, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The Chronicle reported that the early-January violence and other recent killings followed a year in which the city had seen a notable decline in homicides.
Safety work underway on the corridor
The latest shooting unfolded along a corridor that city and transit officials have been trying to make safer. International Boulevard has been the focus of roadway and transit-safety changes, including the International Boulevard Quick Build project, which added posts, signage and other traffic-calming measures, according to AC Transit. Officials say the upgrades are intended to improve safety for drivers, transit riders and pedestrians along the busy stretch.
