A late-night favor on Detroit’s east side turned into a nightmare when a 62-year-old man pulling over to help another driver was instead robbed at gunpoint near the northbound I-75 service drive and Brentwood Street, police said.
The victim told officers he had stopped to assist a motorist early Sunday morning when a man and woman in a dark-colored truck pulled up. As he walked back to his own vehicle, the pair announced a robbery and demanded his belongings. He handed over his car keys, wallet, cash, cellphone and eyeglasses before the suspects drove off north on the service drive.
Timeline, case number and reward
The holdup happened at about 3:38 a.m. Sunday and is logged under case number 2602150062, according to Detroit Rewards TV. The city is offering a $1,000 reward for tips that help crack the case, and tipsters are urged to include the case number when submitting information online or by phone.
Who police are looking for
Investigators are searching for a couple believed to be behind the robbery. The male suspect is described as about 59 years old with a muscular build and possibly known by the first name “Orlando,” while the female suspect is believed to be around 52 years old with a slim build and straight blonde hair, according to ClickOnDetroit. Both suspects were seen getting out of a dark-colored truck, confronting the victim, then climbing back into the vehicle and fleeing north on the I-75 service drive.
How to share what you know
Anyone with information is asked to call the Detroit Police Department’s 11th Precinct at 313-596-1140, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP, or submit a tip through DetroitRewards.tv, according to FOX 2 Detroit. Police are urging the public not to confront the suspects and instead pass along any sightings or information through official channels.
Crime trends and why this case still matters
City leaders have been touting overall drops in major crimes in recent reports, but the mayor’s office and police have stressed that community tips remain critical to closing cases, according to the City of Detroit. Incidents like this Brentwood-area robbery show that even as citywide numbers move in the right direction, individual crimes still hit residents hard and require sustained investigative work.
The case was also reported by MLive, and police said they expect to release additional information as the investigation continues. Anyone with video, doorbell footage or other evidence from the area near the I-75 service drive around the time of the robbery is encouraged to come forward.
