Working an overnight security shift that was supposed to help pay his way to dental school, 22-year-old Sunjun July was shot in the parking lot of the Wyndham Grand hotel in downtown Oklahoma City on Jan. 11 and later died from his injuries. His family describes him as gentle and nonconfrontational, someone who "stood for respect and morals," and they say the killing has left them demanding accountability. A 16-year-old is now in custody on a murder complaint.
According to The Oklahoman, officers arrived at the hotel around 2:40 a.m. and found July in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a metro-area hospital, where he died a short time later. The report states that hotel staff had been escorting a group of juveniles from the lobby when an altercation in the parking lot escalated. Investigators allege a 16-year-old pulled a pistol, shot July, then pistol-whipped another employee and accidentally shot himself. He was later located and booked into the Oklahoma County Juvenile Detention Center on a murder complaint.

Family members told KOCO that July took the security job specifically to save money for dental school, describing him as a protector with big plans for his future. They shared that he loved anime, especially One Piece, and listened to music by Ye. A fundraiser organized by his sister had collected $9,495 toward a $12,000 goal to help cover funeral and burial costs, according to the GoFundMe page.
Legal Steps and Juvenile Considerations
Per The Oklahoman, the 16-year-old suspect was booked into juvenile custody on a murder complaint and is expected to appear for arraignment on Feb. 4. Authorities have not released his name because he is a minor. Whether prosecutors move to transfer the case to adult court, which could change potential penalties and how records are handled, will be decided through juvenile-court procedures as the case continues.
Funeral and Community Response
Funeral services for July were held Jan. 21 at Deep Fork Hillabee Baptist Church, with interment at Greenlawn Cemetery in Checotah, according to an obituary posted by Tribute Archive. In the weeks since, a petition has been launched in his name on Change.org calling for mandatory ballistic vests for security guards. Family members say they want the teenagers involved, as well as their parents, to be held responsible.
