
A multi-unit apartment building in East Garfield Park erupted in flames Saturday evening, sending a towering column of gray smoke over the West Side that drivers could see from I-290. Flames punched through the roof as firefighters rushed ladder trucks and engines into position.

The fire broke out around 5:20 p.m. near the 3000 block of West Madison Street in East Garfield Park, according to NBC Chicago. Video and photos from the scene showed a multi-unit building with heavy smoke and bright orange flames pouring from the roof, with the smoke plume visible from nearby I-290 and across the West Side.
Firefighters on scene
Multiple firetrucks converged on the block as crews set up an aggressive attack on the blaze. At one point, three ladders were raised to the roof while firefighters worked to knock down the flames, NBC Chicago reported. The outlet noted that "no additional information was immediately available" as crews worked the scene.
