A rural stretch of Farm to Market Road 2709 north of Athens turned deadly yesterday when a pickup struck a pedestrian, and the driver took off, authorities said. The victim later died from injuries suffered in the crash, and investigators are now searching for both the vehicle and the person behind the wheel.

According to KLTV, the Texas Department of Public Safety said the collision happened at about 7 a.m. in the 4200 block of FM 2709, west of State Highway 19, while the person was walking. DPS said the investigation into the fatal hit-and-run remains ongoing.

Henderson County Confirms Death As DPS Takes Lead

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office told KLTV that a person was struck on FM 2709 in the early morning hours and that Texas DPS is handling the case. Local officials have not yet released the victim’s name.
