Two FBI Special Agents, Daniel Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger, were remembered on the fifth anniversary of their deaths while serving in the line of duty. The memorial service, which took place at the FBI Miami Field Office, saw law enforcement officials gather to honor the agents' service and sacrifice, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida.

During the ceremony, Special Agent in Charge Brett Skiles shared anecdotes from Alfin and Schwartzenberger's time at the Academy, in the field, and at home, demonstrating their relentless dedication to their roles; and FBI Director Kash Patel, who not only spoke words of comfort for the bereaved but also his resolve in keeping the agents' memory at the forefront with a planned permanent memorial. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, it was on February 2, 2021, when Agents Alfin and Schwartzenberger were fatally shot in Sunrise, during a violent crimes against children investigation, where they were ambushed serving a federal search warrant, which also wounded three of their colleagues, their bravery deemed emblematic of the FBI's highest traditions.

Director Patel voiced heartfelt sympathy for the families and the wider FBI community, saying he is reminded daily of Agents Dan and Laura and remains committed to honoring their memory through continued service to justice and the protection of the public. Alongside the memorial tree and bench with a commemorative plaque, these remarks served as a testament to the agents' service, further instilled by U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones's words, “Five years later, the loss of Dan Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger is still felt across our law enforcement family. They ran toward danger to protect the most vulnerable, and they paid the ultimate price in service to others. Today we honor their courage, stand with their families and colleagues, and recommit ourselves to the mission they lived every day, protecting our community and upholding the rule of law,” as noted by the same press release.
