A Fort Lauderdale gas station turned into a live crime scene when a July 31, 2025 shootout in the parking lot of the Wawa near Northwest Ninth Avenue left two men wounded. Now, a 29-year-old local man is facing a second-degree attempted murder charge in connection with the chaos caught on surveillance cameras at the pumps.
The suspect, identified as Carlton Devdre Fortham, was being held without bond at the Broward County Main Jail. Online jail records show Fortham was booked into the facility Tuesday on a second-degree attempted murder charge, according to Local 10. The outlet reports he remained in custody without bond as of Wednesday morning.
According to a Fort Lauderdale Police Department report cited by Local 10, surveillance footage shows the two men briefly meeting near a white BMW before things turned violent. The victim was shot in the leg and then returned fire, striking Fortham in the eye. Investigators say the video captures Fortham saying, "You're f***ing dead," just before the gunfire begins. Officers found both men still at the scene, and one was treated at a nearby hospital.
At the scene
The July 31 confrontation drew a heavy police response and rattled nearby businesses, with witnesses telling WSVN they heard rapid gunfire and saw a car riddled with bullets. Hoodline also covered the original incident under the headline three injured after shooting, noting two people were taken to Broward Health Medical Center and a third person declined transport. Police repeatedly said there was no ongoing threat to the public once the scene was secured.
Records and next steps
Booking information for Fortham appeared in county jail records, but prosecutors had not posted a trial date in public dockets as of Wednesday. A search of the Broward County Clerk of Courts online portal showed no scheduled hearing, according to the Clerk's search tool. Fort Lauderdale police and the State Attorney's Office did not immediately respond to requests for additional comment.
Why it matters
Gunfire at convenience-store pumps has become a recurring public-safety concern across South Florida this year, from a deadly April incident at a Wawa in Miami-Dade to other pumpside shootings, according to NBC6 and local reporting. Police are asking anyone with information about the Fort Lauderdale case to contact detectives as the investigation continues.
