A fourth Broward County school employee has now been swept up in a growing investigation into alleged off-the-books basketball tournaments at public school gyms. The latest suspect walked out of the Broward County jail after posting bond Monday night and is facing felony charges, tightening the net around what investigators say was an illegal gym rental side hustle inside the district.
According to WSVN, 50-year-old Shaune Cannon, identified as a behavior technician at Forest Glen Middle School, was arrested Monday on charges of organized scheme to defraud and grand theft. Prosecutors allege Cannon held unauthorized basketball tournaments at district facilities and took in payments related to those events.
As he left the Broward County jail, Cannon told reporters, "Eventually, everybody will know what really happened," adding that he plans to defend his character in court. WSVN reported he bonded out Monday night after being booked on the counts.
Months-long probe widens beyond coaches
Cannon’s arrest is the latest turn in a months-long investigation by Broward Schools Police that had already led to three earlier arrests: coaches Henry McNabb, Brenton Hankerson and Donald Calloway, according to Local 10. Authorities say the probe centers on district employees allegedly renting out school gyms to outside groups without going through the official approval and payment process.
Unsealed arrest affidavits in the earlier cases include Zelle transfers and other financial records that investigators say show improper payments for those gym rentals. NBC6 reported that investigators say Hankerson received about $5,950, McNabb around $5,200 and Calloway roughly $2,800, while the school district estimated it lost thousands of dollars in rental revenue from the alleged off-the-books tournaments.
Deep roots in local youth hoops
Public records and local coverage show Cannon has been a familiar face in Coral Springs youth basketball circles for years. Parkland Talk noted that he previously coached at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and has worked as a behavior technician at Forest Glen Middle. Corporate filings also connect him to the Coral Springs Rock United organization, according to public business records.
District vows accountability
Broward County Public Schools has said it is not shrugging off the allegations. The district told reporters it is taking the accusations "very seriously" and that employees implicated in the investigation could face termination, Local 10 reported. Officials have framed the arrests as part of a broader push to protect the integrity of school operations while law enforcement continues its work.
Felony counts and a long court road ahead
Cannon is charged with organized scheme to defraud and grand theft, both felony offenses that will be prosecuted in Broward County as the criminal probe moves forward. The criminal case is separate from any internal district disciplinary process, NBC6 noted, and all four employees remain entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until they are convicted in court.
Investigators say the inquiry is still active and more arrests have not been ruled out as they continue combing through financial records and transactions tied to the basketball events. Regional outlets, including the Sun Sentinel and local television stations, are expected to keep tracking developments as the case winds its way through the courts.
