Frankfort High School was the center of intense police activity on Tuesday, as officers responded to a reported threat involving a weapon. The incident, which stirred anxiety among students, parents, and staff, began when a school resource officer, off-duty but on-site as part of Frankfort Community Schools' safety program, called for backup concerning a student purportedly carrying a weapon in the classroom.
Officials quickly secured the area, but the classroom in question was empty. The student mentioned in reports was later found and detained in the lunchroom by the resource officer, with the incident captured and circulated on social media. According to the Frankfort Police Department, preliminary information indicates the student made no threat to anyone or the school.
Amid heightened concerns over school incidents nationwide, police acted appropriately in responding to what they believed was an immediate threat. The threat was ultimately found to be unfounded.
Despite the serious situation and strong police presence, the community was informed that no charges would be filed against the student. Photos online showed a scene of urgency, but Frankfort Police noted, “That student was only detained due to the information officers had at that time.” Coordination between school officials and police prevented a potentially more serious situation.
