A 20-year-old from Garfield Heights has been arrested in Cleveland, following a deadly shooting incident involving a Lyft driver, as News 5 Cleveland reports. The shooting of the rideshare driver, 56-year-old Antoine Latham, occurred on the city's East side on Sunday, with the suspect now in custody and multiple firearms seized as part of the evidence collected during a search warrant execution.
Regarding the connection between the arrest and the fatal shooting, officials, who haven't confirmed if the suspect ordered the rideshare, maintain there's probable cause linking him to the crime, Cleveland Police Sgt. Wilfred Diaz said, "At this point though we do have probable cause to believe that this individual is responsible for the shooting death of the 56-year old man," News 5 Cleveland reported; no further details of the investigation have been released, as anticipation builds around whether charges will be officially laid pending against the young man whose identity remains undisclosed.
The incident is just the forefront of a troubling surge, only days apart, another Lyft driver, 27-year-old Vasyl Shvets, was found shot and killed, this time on East 84th Street, after apparently crashing into a dumpster, according to Cleveland19. The rideshare community in Cleveland has expressed shock and fear following the violence with Lyft driver Kayla Sheldt sharing her concerns, "I’m shocked. I'm kind of terrified, I'm scared for my own safety now," and suggesting that rideshare companies should be taking additional steps for driver safety, including possibly providing dash cameras and expanding available safety tools for better control over ride acceptances, as per her interview with WKYC.
