The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has stepped in at the behest of the Clayton County Sheriff’s Department (CCSD) to look into a shooting by an officer that resulted in a juvenile being injured in Clayton County, GA. According to a GBI press release, not a single officer suffered injuries during the incident.
Information gathered in the early stages indicates that the event unfolded last Saturday, after a woman fell victim to a carjacking near Rex, GA, carried out by two juveniles. The stolen vehicle was later spotted by two CCSD deputies, igniting a chase. Leading to the 6000 block of Bedford Road, the pursuit ended when the juveniles, abandoning the car, attempted to get away on foot. In the ensuing confrontation, a deputy discharged his weapon, striking and injuring one of the fleeing juveniles.
The injured party was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition with a single wound. Meanwhile, his accomplice did not fare so well, having been caught and subsequently delivered to a Department of Juvenile Justice Regional Youth Detention Center. The names and ages of the juveniles have not been released due to their status as minors, as detailed by GBI.
An active and ongoing inquiry into the nuances of the shooting has been confirmed by the GBI. As fixtures of due process dictate, once the GBI wraps up their investigation, it's expected that the findings will make their way to the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office, which will take on the task of reviewing the case.
