Gunfire shattered the quiet at Magnolia Pointe Apartments late Tuesday night, leaving a woman with life-threatening injuries and rattling a north Durham complex that already knows far too much about violence.
Durham police said officers were called around 11:15 p.m. to reports of a gunshot wound at Magnolia Pointe, off Danube Lane near Hebron Road. When officers arrived, they found a woman who had been shot. She was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to WRAL.
At the scene, a man was detained by officers as they secured the area and began working to figure out what led up to the shooting, WRAL reported. Police have not released details about any possible charges or the relationship between the man and the victim.
Complex has a history of shootings
For Magnolia Pointe residents, the crime scene tape is a grimly familiar sight. The complex has been the backdrop for multiple shootings in recent years, fueling long-standing fears about safety in the neighborhood.
In one of the most wrenching incidents, a 15-year-old was killed there in January 2025, a shooting that neighbors said unfolded while teens were outside having fun on a snow day, according to ABC11.
Investigation under way
Video from WRAL's Breaking News Tracker showed officers handcuffing a man outside one of the buildings at Magnolia Pointe while forensic investigators swabbed his hands for evidence. Detectives continued working the scene overnight, canvassing for clues and potential witnesses.
Durham police are asking anyone who might have seen or heard anything to contact investigators as they work to piece together what happened, according to WRAL.
