A man has been arrested in Gwinnett County for allegedly impersonating a sheriff's deputy to execute armed robberies, according to local authorities. Samuel Baxter is now facing multiple serious felony charges, including home invasion and kidnapping, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a felony. This apprehension follows a collaborative effort between the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office and Georgia State Patrol that led to Baxter's detaining.
The investigation into this deception began on January 9, after the local police department alerted the Sheriff's Office of a group suspected to have been masquerading as law enforcement to aggressively commit robberies. A nearly month-long surveillance operation in DeKalb County ultimately helped to locate Baxter, who, upon being stopped by troopers, failed to appropriately comply, necessitating officers to quickly deploy controlled techniques in order to subdue him. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that an ambulance was called to the scene as a safety measure, which Baxter declined.
Following the traffic stop, Baxter was taken to GCPD Headquarters for questioning about his alleged involvement in the robbery crew. He remains in custody at the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.
