A Vallejo man is facing weapons and vehicle charges after what started as a routine traffic stop in American Canyon turned into a gun arrest on Monday, according to police.
Officers say they pulled over a gray Mercedes at the intersection of Eucalyptus Drive and State Route 29 for a traffic infraction and ended up finding a loaded handgun hidden in the car. The driver, identified by police as 23-year-old Christian Sandoval, was booked into the Napa County Department of Corrections on a list of weapons and vehicle violations.
According to the American Canyon Police Department Facebook post, officers found a Glock 26 loaded with an extended 24-round magazine hidden in the backseat of the Mercedes after the stop. The post states that Sandoval was on a court own-recognizance release tied to a November 2025 arrest when he was taken into custody.
Police say he was arrested and booked on counts that include possession of a concealed firearm in a vehicle, possession of a large-capacity magazine, failure to stop at a red light and operating a vehicle with an obstructed window.
What Officers Found And Processing
Police shared a short video of the stop on their social feed and said the firearm and extended magazine were not visible until officers searched the vehicle. The search, they noted, is what turned an everyday traffic enforcement stop into a weapons case.
Detainees in Napa County are processed through the Napa County Department of Corrections, and the county's corrections site explains how custody and booking reports are handled and how the public can request records.
Legal Exposure
Under California law, carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle is prohibited and can be charged as a misdemeanor or, in some situations, a felony; see Penal Code 25400. Possession of a large-capacity magazine - generally defined as a feeding device that holds more than 10 rounds - is covered by Penal Code 32310, which can bring fines or potential jail time depending on the circumstances and a person's prior record.
Local Context
The seizure is the latest in a series of traffic-stop gun recoveries in American Canyon. The city has previously posted media releases about firearms found during vehicle stops, and a Patch roundup last November documented three arrests in which officers recovered Glock pistols during traffic enforcement. Those earlier incidents highlight a recent pattern in the North Bay where simple traffic violations have led to additional weapons arrests.
American Canyon police did not immediately provide further details beyond their social media post. The department lists non-emergency contact options on the city police page for tips and general inquiries, and anyone with information about the stop is asked to reach out through those public channels.
