Another life was cut short before sunrise in Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood on Wednesday, as gunfire once again shattered the quiet near South I Street. Tacoma police say officers responded around 4:49 a.m. to reports of shots fired near South I Street and South 11th Street, where they found a person suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and later died. Detectives have opened a homicide investigation, marking yet another deadly incident in the same area within days.
Police Launch Homicide Investigation
According to FOX 13 Seattle, Tacoma officers were dispatched just before 5 a.m. to the intersection of South I and South 11th after multiple reports of gunfire. When officers arrived, they located a victim with gunshot wounds, provided aid and had the person transported to a local hospital, where the victim was later pronounced dead. The department has classified the case as a homicide and assigned detectives to take over the investigation.
Part Of A String Of Recent Shootings
The deadly shooting did not happen in a vacuum. The Hilltop neighborhood has been reeling from multiple violent incidents in recent days. On Feb. 2, officers were called to the 1200 block of South I Street, where they discovered an unresponsive man and opened a separate homicide probe, as previously reported in a Hoodline story titled "Body Found On South I Street." In that earlier case, detectives asked anyone with information to contact the Tacoma Police non-emergency line, underscoring how much they are relying on community tips as the shootings pile up.
What Officials Are Asking
So far, police have not released any suspect description or possible motive in Wednesday’s killing. Detectives remained at the scene processing evidence, and authorities say more details will be shared as they become available. FOX 13 Seattle reports that Tacoma Police are treating the case as an active homicide investigation and are urging anyone who saw or heard anything to come forward. For now, neighbors in Hilltop are left with more questions than answers as investigators work to piece together what happened.
