A firefighter was injured by falling ceiling drywall during an apartment fire in east Indianapolis. The incident occurred around 6:05 p.m. on January 31 on the 2800 block of Priscilla Avenue, near Arlington Avenue and Interstate 70. Firefighters responding to the call found heavy smoke coming from both floors of the building, according to WTHR.

The Indianapolis Fire Department brought the apartment fire under control in 35 minutes. During the response, a firefighter was struck on the head by falling ceiling drywall and was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital for evaluation, according to WTHR. The fire had spread into the attic, posing a serious threat to residents.

Seven individuals, including three adults, four children, and one dog, were in the apartment when the fire broke out. All occupants were able to safely exit the building, "with one of the adults for running out to safety with the dog," according to a post on FOX59. The website also reported that the Indianapolis Fire Department's Victims Assistance unit, together with the Red Cross, is providing support to find shelter for those displaced by the fire.

IFD investigators determined the fire was caused by an unattended candle surrounded by combustibles. WISH-TV reported that a woman had lit the candle in the living room before smoke alerted the occupants. A man evacuated with the family dog, while the woman went upstairs to rescue four children, ages 1, 5, 8, and 10. All residents, including the infant, were checked at the scene and found to be in good health.
