An Indianapolis man, Zakii Dawson, has entered a guilty but mentally ill plea in the murder of a 77-year-old woman, Mary Sims, an act that took place two years prior in the southwest side of the city, with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office indicating that the sentence expected is 45 years in prison, reports WTHR.
Dawson, who was 18 at the time of the murder in 2024, was arrested after the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived at Sims' residence in response to a disturbance call, where they discovered her lifeless body handcuffed and with a plastic bag wrapped around her head; Sims' granddaughter had previously entered the mobile home, noting signs of disarray and the distinct scent of bleach before locating Dawson concealed behind a door, this according to information provided by both FOX59 and WISH-TV.
The incidents unfolded at the Lake of the Pines mobile home community designed for individuals 55 and older, and prior to the murder, Dawson had been expelled from the home and was warned not to return after causing a disturbance, during which he assaulted Sims and damaged property; despite the warnings, he returned with fatal consequences, as described by the WISH-TV report.
In an interview with the police following his arrest, Dawson confessed to the crimes, acknowledging he should not have gone back to the residence and admitting to the restraint and murder of Sims, who had previously shown him goodwill by allowing him to live in her home to aid in his stabilization, that's while investigators also noted injuries to his hands and blood on his clothing which hinted at Dawson's involvement in the grisly scene, these details shared by both FOX59 and WTHR.
Marion County Prosecutor, Ryan Mears, reflected on the nature of the case, stating, "It takes a special kind of person to open their home to someone in a time of need," and expressing that Mary and her family, who offered Dawson a place in their lives, "should be remembered as good, kind people who did not deserve this unimaginable tragedy," a sentiment echoed in statements obtained by both FOX59 and WISH-TV.
