Kaua‘i residents are again navigating a patchwork of temporary closures and redirected services at the island’s refuse transfer stations, as the county juggles equipment repairs and a long-running Kapa‘a renovation. The latest updates, shared on the County of Kaua‘i public channels, include a Kapa‘a project expected to run into March and a shifting mix of “now open” signs for scrap metal and appliance drop-offs.
County Post Sends Mixed Signals
According to a recent update from the County of Kaua‘i on Facebook, the Solid Waste Division marked metals and appliance drop-offs as “now open” at several sites, even as at least one transfer station was flagged as not accepting refuse because of equipment trouble. The post laid out site-by-site adjustments aimed at keeping trash moving while crews work on repairs.
Bulletin Spells Out Long Kapa‘a Closure
In the county’s official bulletin, published this month, Kapa‘a is listed as closed for renovations through March 2026, with one key exception, according to the County of Kaua‘i. Green-waste service remains available at Kapa‘a, and residential bagged trash is being accepted on weekends at the Kapa‘a Base Yard.
The bulletin also notes that Līhu‘e and Kekaha are operating on regular hours and specifically points out that Līhu‘e does not accept scrap metal or appliances. The bulletin includes contact numbers and more detailed descriptions of what each site will and will not take.
Where Appliances And Scrap Metal Can Go Now
The Facebook update states that metals and appliance drop-offs are now open at Kapa‘a, Hanapēpē, Hanalei and Kekaha, according to the County of Kaua‘i. At the same time, recent notices have not always lined up from day to day, and residents are urged to double-check before hauling bulky items to a particular site.
When recycling was previously disrupted, county guidance and local reporting pointed residents to interim options such as the Puhi Metals Recycling Center. For background on that stopgap, see reporting on the Puhi stopgap center.
Why The Closures Keep Coming
Closures and service reshuffles have become a recurring headache because of aging compactors, transfer trailers and occasional staffing gaps, and the county has said upgrades and phased replacements are in the works to make the system more reliable. Reporting by Kaua‘i Now noted that compactors at several RTS sites are antiquated and scheduled for replacement as part of longer-term improvements.
Before you load up the truck, check the transfer-station status or make a quick call. Residents are advised to visit the County of Kaua‘i transfer-station page or call the Solid Waste Division at (808) 241-4841, or the weekend-update line at (808) 212-4683, to confirm whether a particular site is currently accepting the items they plan to drop off.
