Residents near Mattie Beal Park will see changes as the City of Lawton removes a bridge that does not meet Oklahoma Department of Transportation safety standards. City officials decided to remove the structure after repair costs were considered too high and funding was not approved. The bridge will be converted into a standard roadway.
Work began on February 9 and the initial phase is expected to be completed within two weeks, according to an update from the City of Lawton. Street Division crews are removing the bridge and preparing the site for its new use as a roadway.
After that phase is complete, the Drainage Division will assess the canal and surrounding area to ensure proper water flow and reduce the risk of flooding. The city said additional updates will be shared as the project progresses.
