A Scioto County man was placed under arrest following an early morning shooting incident in McDermott. According to the Scioto County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff David Thoroughman, the Sheriff's 911 Communication Center received a report at 6:04 a.m. on Sunday, February 8, 2026, about a man firing a gun on a roadway. Deputies arrived at 2466 Pollock Road and found the suspect subdued by a neighbor who had allegedly disarmed him and was attempting to keep him calm inside a house.
The man informed authorities he had fired at someone attempting to break into his home, claiming the supposed intruder was by a pond on his property. However, an investigation, including video evidence, showed no signs of any other persons on the property or any indication of a break-in. The suspect, later identified as Kyle D. Mays, age 22, was discovered to be under the influence of drugs, and his assertions were found to be baseless.
Following a search of Mays' social media, detectives uncovered a threatening post made before the shooting took place. Mays had stated his intent to "shoot up his step father’s house" due to a verbal altercation they had. Mays has been charged with several felonies, including Having Weapons While Under Disability and Discharging a Firearm Near a Prohibited Area. He is currently held on a $70,000 bond and made his first court appearance on Monday, February 9.
This incident is part of an ongoing investigation that may lead to additional charges presented to the Scioto County Grand Jury at a later date.
