Mesquite police say the shooting was reported around 9:51 p.m. in the 300 block of Rodeo Center Boulevard. Witnesses told dispatchers a man was lying in a business parking lot with a gunshot wound. First responders provided medical care at the scene before he was taken to a hospital, where he later died. The victim was identified as 38-year-old Jose Rodriguez Jaquez, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Witnesses gave officers a description of a vehicle seen leaving the area, and police say they quickly spotted a car that matched. During the traffic stop, officers identified the driver as 35-year-old Brian Maldonado. He was initially cited for operating a vehicle without a front license plate, and detectives later added a murder charge, per The Dallas Morning News.
