The City of Miami is on the hunt for artists to put their stamp on the new City Administration Building. Through its Art in Public Places (AIPP) program, the city has fired off a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) seeking professional artists and teams to craft multiple permanent public art commissions within this forthcoming civic arena, set to be a central node for City services and a hub of civic interaction, as per the city's announcement.
Slated to house key City departments and the City Hall Chambers, the Administration Building is being imagined as more than just a place for bureaucratic activities; it's meant to be an inviting locale for the public to engage with. The RFQ put out by the city is eyeing site-responsive artworks that conversation with the building’s design and add to the vibrancy of the surrounding spaces. A special focus is given to pieces that reflect Miami's diverse cultural identity and improve the quality of public and civic life. According to the announcement made by the City of Miami, regional and local artists might get a nudge over the competition for some specific parts of the project.
Applications have been flung open from tomorrow and will stay that way until March 4. Those eager to throw their hats into the ring can find the full project details and the necessary steps for submission on the city's AIPP webpage, with applications being taken exclusively through CODAworx.com. This call is not limited to the local talent pool, as the city is welcoming national and international artists, provided they have U.S. representation or an established practice stateside.
As dictated by the RFQ, the chosen artworks are expected not only highlight the architectural statements of the new venue but also become a central part of its character as a public space.
